George Schlagel
George Schlagel has served as a board member of The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Johnson County since 2016, and as member of the Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners for over 17 years. George has been a practicing attorney for over 50 years with a concentration in real estate and estate planning. He is a licensed real estate broker in Kansas and Missouri, and an Accredited Estate Planner through the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils.
George is a past president and 40-year member of both the Olathe Area Chamber of Commerce and the Olathe Rotary Club, as well as an active member in various other civic and business organizations in the Kansas City area including the Mahaffie Foundation.
George grew up as a dairy farmer in the Corporate Woods area of Overland Park and has a background in land and animal management. He and his family took care of their land and have been involved with the Johnson County Soil Conservation Board for 60 years. George still owns five farms in Johnson, Miami, and Linn Counties.
Managing a park is much like running a farm. However, my farms have less rules so that I can drive where I want, hunt where I want, and cut any trees that I believe need to be cut. My wife thinks I am nuts for having four chainsaws. However, I do not think that someone can have too many chainsaws. Being a good steward of the land is something in common with both parks and our privately owned land. I enjoy what I am doing and life is good!
George’s legal background helps with Park District and Foundation activities from buying land and granting easements, to dealing with invasive species. George likes to fish and hunt and is an amateur wine maker. He and his wife Gale love to travel.
